Most of what goes wrong with a wood burner is decided before it's lit — wrong size for the room, a flue that won't draw, or an install that was never signed off.
- Sized on a free survey, not over the phone. We measure the room, check the flue and clearances, and tell you what it actually needs.
- A written, itemised quote. You can see what the stove costs, what the liner costs and what the labour costs — before you commit to anything.
- No chimney? Not a problem. Twin-wall insulated flue systems can run internally through the roof or externally up the wall.
- Signed off and notified to building control. You get a Certificate of Compliance — which matters to your insurer now, and to your buyer's solicitor later.

The part homeowners actually worry about isn't the sweeping — it's the soot on the carpet. Here's exactly how we stop that happening.
- Sealed and vacuumed throughout. Dust sheets down, the opening sealed with heavy-duty sheeting, and a HEPA soot vacuum running the whole time we power-sweep.
- Draw tested before we leave. A clean flue is no use if it isn't pulling properly — so we check it, not just sweep it.
- A swept certificate for your insurer. Most policies expect an up-to-date one before they'll entertain a chimney-related claim.
- If we find a problem, we show you. We'll photograph it and quote it separately. You're never asked to say yes to extra work on the doorstep.
Worth knowing: we check your logs with a moisture meter while we're there. Anything over 20% moisture smokes badly and tars up the flue you've just paid to have cleaned.

About Riley Stoves & Sweeps
We're a HETAS-registered stove and chimney business based in Ormskirk, working across West Lancashire, Southport and north Merseyside.
A wood burner should look right and be safe, and the two aren't separate jobs. We size it properly, fit it to standard, and don't cut corners on the parts you'll never see.
Every install is certified and notified to building control. Every sweep comes with a certificate. Dust sheets go down on both, and your room comes back to you the way we found it — just warmer.

The things people ask us first
How often should my chimney be swept?
For wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves, once a year is strongly advised — ideally just before the cold season. If you burn coal or damp, high-resin wood, twice a year is better. Most home insurance policies expect an up-to-date sweep certificate before they'll cover a chimney-related claim.
Do I need a chimney to have a wood burner fitted?
No. If your home hasn't got a traditional masonry chimney, we can design and install a twin-wall insulated flue system. The stainless steel pipe can route up through the ceiling and roof, or out through an external wall and up above the guttering.
Are you HETAS registered?
Yes. It means stove fittings, liners and twin-wall systems can be signed off and notified to building control without a separate local authority inspection — and you get a Certificate of Compliance for your records. That matters to your insurer now, and to your buyer's solicitor when you come to sell.
Will you make a mess of my house?
No, and this is the part we're most careful about. Dust sheets go down, the fireplace opening is sealed with heavy-duty sheeting, and a HEPA soot vacuum runs continuously while we power-sweep the flue. Everything is cleared away at the end.
What happens if you find extra work while you're here?
We show you, photograph it, and quote it separately. You're never asked to agree to extra work on the spot, and you're free to get other prices.
How long does a stove installation take?
A standard install — lining an existing brick chimney, laying a hearth and connecting the stove — is usually one working day. Heavier work, like opening up a fireplace, fitting a lintel or building a chamber, typically takes two days.
Do you check for wet wood?
Yes. UK rules limit burning logs above 20% moisture, and wet wood smokes heavily and coats your flue with tar and creosote. During a sweep we'll check your logs with a moisture meter and give you straight advice on seasoning wood properly.
How do I get a price?
For a stove installation we come out, survey the room and the flue, and send you a written, itemised quote. The survey is free and there's no obligation. For a chimney sweep, call or WhatsApp us and we'll confirm a date. Costs depend on the flue, the liner length and how much building work the opening needs — which is exactly why we look first rather than guess.
